When Samuel Carlos Grey was born he had too many sets of parents. He was intended to live in Wildwind with his adoptive parents the Grey's. But, his mother, Kelsey Jefferson, needed him as a bargaining tool. After failing to win Edmund Grey’s heart, she set her sights on keeping Sam’s father, Bobby Warner, in her grips. When Kelsey caught Bobby in an embrace with Sam’s aunt Anita Santos, she declared that the Grey's were not going to take Sam away from her.

His adoptive mother, Maria Grey, had loved him unconditionally from birth. When Kelsey reneged on their adoption agreement, she went on the run. At the airport, Edmund confronted Maria and told her the right thing to do was to return Sam to Kelsey.

Kelsey and Bobby could not find the correct balance between school and raising a child. Resolved to the situation, Kelsey finally agreed to sign the final adoption papers.

Wildwind got a new addition when Sam was joined by a little sister, Madelyne Flora Grey. The Grey’s happiness was cut short with Maria’s sudden death in a plane crash off the Jersey shore.

Edmund raised Maddie and Sam on his own for years. They almost got a new mother figure in Alex Marick, whom Sam was especially affectionate towards. However, a constant for Sam was always Brooke English. Phoebe Wallingford enlisted Sam and Maddie’s help to reunite Edmund and Brooke at the Crystal Ball. Soon, they were engaged, and Sam would finally get a new mother.

The night of Edmund and Brooke’s wedding, Maddie came into the chapel claiming to have seen her “Angel Mommy.” Edmund found Maria, alive in the Wildwind crypt. She had miraculously survived the plane crash. It did not matter so much that Maria was an amnesiac because Sam saw Maria as much a stranger as she saw him. Memories of Maddie’s birth helped bond mother and daughter, but Maria was still unable to remember Edmund or Sam.

When Maria did finally remember her old life, the Grey's embraced their newfound happiness. The children and Maria celebrated everything in fives to makeup for the five years Maria as missing. But, things began to change at a fast and sudden pace. First, Edmund was paralyzed protecting Maria from a mobster’s bullet. Zach Slater arrived in Pine Valley with the revelation that he was living with Maria while she was an amnesiac in Nevada. He made explicit efforts to seduce Maria. Then, Bobby came back to town reveling that he too was working for Zach. Sam decided to find refuge away from Pine Valley and left for Boarding School.

Sam’s refuge could not shield him from the biggest shock of his life. Shortly after his family had come and visited him, Edmund was murdered in the Wildwind barn. Zach was the main suspect. Sam returned to Pine Valley to comfort her sister, but he could not sympathize with Maria. He blamed her for taking away his father, the one true parent he always knew. Sam and Maddie saw Zach as the root of their family’s problems.

When Jonathan Lavery was revealed to be his father’s killer, Sam insisted on helping with the manhunt. After Jonathan’s cave hideaway exploded, Sam found a frightened Lily Montgomery hiding in an emptied out tree bark. Lily was the sole witness to Edmund’s murder. Sam comforted Lily the best he could.

Sam and Lily bonded over the traumas of surrounding Jonathan’s terror. Dating for the duo was a challenge because of Lily’s autism. Everyone warned Sam that Lily had special needs. But, Sam looked past all that and saw Lily as any other person.

Maria announced her plans to move the family to California. Sam did not want to be separated from Lily, or spend time away from his home to be with a woman he despised. He took matters in his own hands, turning to Brooke, the executor of the Grey Estate, and Tad Martin, his biological great-uncle. They decided that he should stay in Pine Valley this summer to learn more about his Martin roots. He would live with his maternal great-grandparents, Joe and Ruth Martin. Maria was surprised because. Sam had never shown any interest in learning about his biological family before. But, she was at odds end with her children. She needed any help she could get.

Before Maria left, mother and son came to an understanding that they needed to rebuild their relationship. The hardest farewell for Sam was saying goodbye to Maddie. Through all the changes in his family, Maddie had always been there for him

But staying in Pine Valley proved to be a bad idea for Sam. He began acting out, even hurting Lily in a drunken haze. Brooke tried to connect with Sam by telling him about the death of her daughter, Laura Cudahy, as a result of a drunk driver. One of the only people who seemed to be able to get through to him was Julia Keefer, his aunt who recently left Witness Protection. Lily and Sam had found her after noting mysterious occurrences at a supposedly empty Wildwind. Julia conveyed that as Maria and Edmund’s marriage had began to crumble in the end, so had hers to husband Noah Keefer. It did not mean either of his parents had stopped loving each other or him. These words hit a cord with Sam.

Sam finally apologized to Lily for not taking her feelings into consideration. At the summers end, he left to join his family in California.
