Ryan was a con man who was conned. Gloria Marsh realized he was pretending
to be part of a bus accident to get the
insurance
money. She turned on Ryan by having him donate his blood to a dying Dimitri
in exchange for her silence. Ryan knew he met his match in Gloria.
Ryan needed a job desperately. He turned to Liza Colby at WRCW for help. Liza agreed to hire him as an ad agent. As a favor to Liza, he donated a sample of his sperm as well. The sample remained unused as Liza decided Jake Martin was a better candidate.
He met Kelsey Jefferson there, who was pursuing Scott Chandler. Scott
was currently in a relationship with Gillian Andrassy. Ryan had a great attraction
to the Princess and agreed with Kelsey to break them up. Ryan mainly saw dollar
signs when he met Gillian. The two flirted, and Ryan asked for her hand in marriage.
When they finally wed, Ryan was in for the shock of his life. Gillian had no
money and married him solely to avoid
deportation.
Ryan was ready to break the union; however, Eugenia Andrassy told him just to
stay with her for a year at Wildwind to prevent her deportation. He agreed,
after all it was a free ride. Over this year, Ryan began to see a new side of
Gillian he had had not seen before. Ryan had real feeling for Gillian, and she
was reciprocating. They caught themselves at times close to professing their
love.
Ryan was accused by Kit Montgomery to be her rapist. A DNA test matched
his DNA. Hayley Vaughan helped Ryan flee Wildwind with Gillian. They went on
the run, and Hayley promised to leave them some money. The money never got to
them. Gillian went to David Hayward for help, who would only consent if she
slept with him. Ryan was caught and put in prison. Ryan knew his brother Braden
had committed the crime, but he did not turn him in. Dixie Cooney, who befriended
Braden, found out the truth and exonerated Ry
an.
Braden attacked Dixie, and Ryan saved her. He told Braden to get out of town
and leave he and his new friends alone.
Ryan found out what Gillian did and divorced her, although he still loved her. He started an Internet company, incredibledreams.com, that fulfilled people's dreams for a price. Greenlee Smythe encouraged her grandfather to invest in his company so that she could work her way into his heart. Greenlee was infatuated with Ryan and wanted to keep he and Gillian apart. Gillian was married to Jake Martin, but she loved Ryan. Jake left to Chechnya after he found out that Colby Chandler was not his. Gillian turned to Ryan for support. Greenlee tried to keep them apart, but she could not.
Upon Jake's return, Gillian and Ryan had to suppress their feelings.
They could not it, and Gillian broke off
her
marriage to Jake. The two planned to have a big wedding in Hungary, but neither
had enough money. The day they where to go to the Justice of the Peace to get
married, Dimitri Marick surprised them with a wedding at Wildwind.
Marital bliss did not last. An assassin aiming for Anna Devane shot Gillian
in the head. Ryan had to make the decision to take her off life support in order
to give her heart to the dying Laura English du Pres, his best friend Leo du
Pres' wife. Ryan broke away from reality, leaving his company and pushing away
everyone he loved. He had an affair with Liza Colby, and Mia Saunders. He also
believed Opal Cortlandt to be his passage way to Gillian. On the night Fidelity
burned, Gillian appeared to him and told him not to die and that they would
always be together.
Ryan moved into the Pine Cone Motel and became close to his neighbor, Kendall Hart. The two leaned on each other for support. Kendall helped Ryan move on, and they where engaged. When his mother died, he realized that she had kept a secret from him: FBI Agent Chris Stamp was his true father. Ryan was hesitant to befriend the man who killed his father, Patrick, in a drug bust. His cousin, Anna Devane, told him to give Chris a chance. With this new family, he moved on. He went to Erica's penthouse to invite Chris to his and Kendall's wedding only to find his fiancée seducing Aidan Devane. He rode off in the rain leaving Pine Valley in his dust.
Ryan returned to Pine Valley a year later with money in tow. He was
to be the heir of Alexander Cambias, a man he saved from a heart attack in Nevada.
Kendall was claiming to be married to Michael Cambias, thus challenging Ryan
for the money. Ryan knew it was another
one
of her scams and is working to uncover the truth.
Ryan bonded with Maria Grey, a woman he thought to be dead. Maria spoke highly of Chris for saving her child's life by giving his. The two formed an unlikely friendship.
Kendall turned to Ryan to help pull off a DNA switch with her and Bianca. Ryan learned that Bianca was raped and pregnant by Michael Cambias. He obliged, falling even more in love with Kendall than ever before. Greenlee tried reveal Kendall’s plan, all the while putting her in danger of criminal prosecution. Ryan pushed Greenlee away for her betrayal, but she did not want to let her friend go. They were on a motorcycle trip when Bianca supposedly lost her daughter, Miranda Montgomery. Ryan nursed a depressed Kendall to health. But, with Miranda’s death, Ryan was now the heir to the Cambias fortune and all it entailed. He turned to Greenlee with a proposition. If they marry, she would get FUSION back. Greenlee accepted, but Kendall learned of the deception. Ryan turned Kendall away and married Greenlee.
Erica
contacted Ryan and asked him to bring her back to Pine Valley. Ryan obliged,
but Kendall insisted on tagging along. There, the two met a shady character
named Zachary Slater, who had put Erica in a hospital against her will. Ryan
was able to bring her home, but her alcoholism continued. On a evening motorcycle
ride through the mountains, he was hit by car. The driver was none other than
Zach. He warned Zach to stay away from the Erica and the other Kane women.
Jonathan Lavery, Ryan’s brother, made his way to Pine Valley and Kendall’s bed. Even through his indiscretion, Ryan invited Jonathan to stay in his home. He even gave the recent "graduate" a job at FUSION. They bonded over their traumatic childhood and abuse at the hands Patrick. Ryan’s home life seemed to be getting better. He was happy to be with his little brother, and seemed to be truly falling in love with Greenlee.
When a man named Ethan Ramsey showed up at FUSION claiming he was the
lost son of the late Alexander Cambias, Jr., Ryan wanted to test the validity
of his statement. With no living blood Cambias, nor any remains that could be
compared, it seemed impossible to find out for sure. In a startling turn of
events, Ryan was shot during Zach's murder game at the Seasons. There, Zach
was revealed to be the late Alexander Cambias, jr. on a vendetta to punish those
who hurt Michael. Ethan was thought to be the shooter, as he had the most to
gain by killing Ryan. But Kendall wanted to prove to Ryan that the culprit was
Zach.
At the same time, Greenlee began acting erratically. Ryan was worried for his wife especially when Kendall lead to find Greenlee hanging from the FUSION roofs thinking she was a trapeeze artist. tests proved Greenlee was poisoned, and Ryan was first to point the finger at Kendall. His investigation took a back-seat when Miranda turned out to be alive. Ryan happily signed all his shares of Cambias over to Miranda, and Ethan whose identity was finally confirmed. It was Jonathan who took the news badly. Everyone noticed his turn to the dark side, everyone but Ryan. It took Maggie Stone admitting that she had been abused by Jonathan to push Ryan to seek help.
Ryan blamed Jonathan's condition on the influence of their abusive
father Patrick. Ryan felt as if he was different since Chris was revealed to
be his real father. But, Ryan's world was turned upside down when Erica found
Chris' old journal, where he admitted that Ryan was not his but Patrick's. Ryan's
self-loathing pushed everyone away and made him ripe for Jonathan's manipulation.
Jonathan said the poisoning, the shooting, and Edmund's murder were all the
work of a vindictive Braden. Ryan was Jonathan's champion, but even he could
not see what was coming up. Jonathan escaped his recovery room, and kidnapped
Greenlee and Lily Mongtomery, the only witness to Edmund's murder.
Kendall
and Ryan each made their attempts at a rescue. Ryan successfully got through
to Jonathan long enough for the women to get away. Ryan and Jonathan hashed
out the crimes of their abusive father and their alcholic mother. With the brothers
alone, Jonathan stood hovering over Braden's dead body. Ryan could not believe
what his brother had done. Jonathan pulled the trigger on the explosives that
lined their cave-prison. When the debria settled, Ryan was the only Lavery found
alive.
Jonathan's plot persuaded Ryan to hate all things Lavery. So as to not pass on Patrick's dark traits, Ryan secretly had a vasectomy knowing Greenlee wanted children. Ryan also turned to David for a psychopathic drug to suppress his anger. With both combinations, he believed that he could be happy with Greenlee.
Greenlee planned a romantic rendezvous at The Seasons. Ryan was asked Greenlee what was going on. She finally revealed that she was pregnant with his child. She had gone behind his back to obtain a sperm sample that had donated years ago for Liza. Ryan reacted by preparing to strike his wife. He grabbed his pills to get some semblance of control. Greenlee told Ryan he was taking a placebo. David had told Greenlee about everything. In a rage, he left the hotel room. He drove off in his motorcyle, right over a cliff.
Ryan saw the crash as his chance to leave town and stop hurting those he loved. Zach had saw him that night, and agreed to keep his secret. He made his way to Canada in search of his sister, Erin Lavery. He followed her around a few days to see her seemingly unaffected by the Lavery gene. When he finally came forward to Erin, she told him she knew exactly who he was: her brother’s attempted killer.
At Erin’s cabin, Ryan was shocked to see Jonathan alive. He had
fell into a state of insanity. They took
Jonathan
to a hospital where he was diagnosed with a behavior-altering tumor. After a
successful surgery, Ryan realized that his whole fear of becoming like his father
was unfounded. He decided to return to Pine Valley, but Jonathan refused to
let him go without him.
Ryan returned to Pine Valley. A lot had changed in his absence. Now, Kendall was pregnant with his and Greenlee’s child. Greenlee had a hard time coming to grips with the fact that Ryan had hired an attorney to clear Jonathan’s name based on his tumor. But the breaking point came when Kendall revealed she was pregnant with her and Ryan’s child, not Greenlee’s. Being lied to too many times, Greenlee left Ryan and Pine Valley.
Ryan and Kendall had to come to grips with their relationship, and their child. Trapped together in a chapel at Christmas, Kendall agreed not to terminate the pregnancy. Ryan began investigating Zach again for the safety of his child. He and Ethan realized Zach had caused a blackout at the fertility clinic forcing Kendall to impregnate herself. When he revealed the truth to Kendall at the Mardi Gras ball, she broke up with Zach, and pushed Ryan away.
