Maria Santos came to Pine Valley trying to escape the small farm town
she grew up in. She became a neurologist at Pine Valley hospital and wore her
way in
to the heart of Edmund Grey. But her past caught up with her.
Del Henry, her college flame, came to Pine Valley in an attempt to reconcile
with her. She was harboring a secret. She was at one time pregnant with his
baby, yet she aborted it herself afraid of what her conservative parents would
have thought. She opened up to Del about this, and he was less then happy. She
turned to Edmund who understood that the decision to let a child go was hard
enough without the criticism from others.
Then her sister, Julia, in a jealous rage over all
of the opportunities Maria had, arrived in Pine Valley. She was determined to
ruin everything Maria had made for herself. When a tornado hit Pine Valley,
Julia was scarred on her face. Maria helped her recover and the two sisters
bonded over the injury. Edmund fell in love with the compassionate Maria and
asked for her hand in marriage. They soon wed, and all of Maria's family relocated
to Pine Valley.
But Edmund and Maria had to fight to find their happiness. Maria thought she lost Edmund in a car bomb at the hands of Matt Callaway. She was mourning her husband, when he arrived at the Wildwind chapel, alive and unscathed. Maria focused her insecurities over Edmund’s job to her insecurities over his continued relationship with ex-girlfriend Brooke English. Edmund assured her it was Maria he loved, but she could not get over how close the two remained.
Julia revealed that she was pregnant with her rapist’s child. Maria helped Julia when she decided to abort the child. She also arranged for Julia to begin nurses training at Pine Valley Hospital. Julia would soon be forced out of Pine Valley under the Witness Protection Program after witnessing a murder. Maria had to say goodbye to a sister she was only beginning to bond with.
The makeshift abortion ruined Maria's chances to conceive. Her sister, Anita, arranged for the Grey's to adopt her friend, Kelsey Jefferson's baby. There would be little objection to the adoption as Kelsey's grandfather was Dr. Joe Martin, Maria's colleague and confidant. The baby was born Samuel Carlos Grey. Kelsey soon changed her mind and asked for the baby back. Maria made a run for the airport, but Edmund caught up with them. Edmund took the baby from Maria and returned it to Kelsey. Maria returned to Wildwind and found her way into Dimitri's, Edmund's brother's, bed.
Maria found herself pregnant. She did not know who the father was,
yet continued to keep Edmund in the dark about her affair. Erica Kane Marick,
Dimitri's wife, found out about the night and confronted her at a cabin. Maria
went into premature labor, and Erica
delivered
the baby. The baby supposedly died that night, but Erica instead kept the baby
saying she adopted it from Russia and named it Sonya. Dimitri and Maria where
somewhat relieved the baby died as a test said he was the father. Erica could
not keep up the charade and returned the baby to Maria and Edmund. They named
her Madelyne Flora after Edmund's mother. The Grey's where now at peace.
On the way home from an award ceremony for family friend Brooke English, the plane began to experience difficulties. Maria opened a note that stated that Edmund was in fact the true father of Maddie. Before she could tell Edmund, the plane crashed down on the Jersey shore. Brooke tried to help her out, but she was stuck. Maria made Brooke promise to take care of Edmund and the kids. The plane went over a cliff, with Maria inside.
Dr. David Hayward found Maria washed up on the shore. He gave her a
drug that healed all her physical injuries, but wiped her memory clear. Afraid
of what he had done, he gave her a new life as Maureen Gorman, a nurse's aid
in Nevada. Half a decade later, Brooke landed in the same hospital she was working
at, looking for Maureen to donate part of her liver to save the life of Enzo
Santos, Maria's nephew. Brooke met Maria as Maureen and could not believe her
eyes. Maureen could not figure out what she wanted and had a friend stand in
her place to throw off Brooke and Tad
Martin. She called David, who warned her not
to go Pine Valley. He came up with a story that she was in fact Maria Santos
and that she killed Maureen Gorman and took her life. Feeling guilty, she returned
to Pine Valley in search of David for more answers. Instead, she was mugged
and befriended her hero, Aidan Devane.
She made her way to Wildwind, a castle she saw in her dreams, on the day of Brooke and Edmund's wedding. She went inside and found a picture of her carrying Maddie. She flashed to that moment. Then she made her way to crypt and saw her tombstone. Maddie found her and called her "Angel Mommy." Maddie brought Edmund back, and he went to embrace her, but she did not respond. She ran away with Maddie to Aidan.
Edmund persuaded Maria to stay with him at Wildwind. She tried to remember
more, but could not and went to therapy from Dr. Zeke McMillan. Edmund and Mateo
Santos tried to help her recover from all the years she was gone. Maria made
it more then apparent she did not want any more answers from David, as whatever
he had said was a lie. Mateo left Pine Valley leaving her a gift: Julia returned
from the Witness Protection Program for Christmas. She recalled Julia's injury
and the bond they had. But still, she remembered nothing of
Edmund. At the same time she
was harboring Aidan in the hayloft, who was on the run from an assassin. Maria
secretly loved Aidan.
Maria left Edmund after finding out he had gone to David for another
drug to restore her memory. She went on the run with Aidan to the Caribbean,
where they where able to thwart the assassination attempt. Returning to
Pine Valley, she and Edmund agreed to split custody of the kids and go their
separate ways. Her mother Isabella was less then happy with this decision and
made her views known.
Maddie was the witness to the murder of Chris Stamp in the park. Flanders, the killer, wanted Maddie to be his next target. Maria and Aidan hid Maddie on Adam's yacht. Flanders tracked them down and through Maddie overboard. Maria jumped in the ocean and frantically searched for Maddie. The stress of the ordeal caused her to flashback to her old life. She remembered Edmund and the love they shared. She tried to hold on to her Maureen personae, but Aidan told her it was too late, she had to go back.
On the stormy night, she made her way back Wildwind. Walking in, she saw Edmund. Something was different. They embraced and she told him she remembered, everything about what they once had. They renewed their vows in a small ceremony at the Chapel.
With the help of Dr. Joe, Maria tested back into her position at the
Pine Valley Hospital. One of her first
cases
was to help Carlos Reyes, he mysteriously died, and Maria blamed herself. Little
did she know, her vow to help those in need put her in the center of a mob family's,
the Calvatras', vendetta against Carlos and his brother, Juan Pablo de Vazquez.
She tried to warn Edmund that they where getting close to Juan Pablo's cabin,
but she got in the way, and Edmund was shot in the back. Edmund was in a coma,
and when he came to, was paralyzed from the hip down.
Anita returned to help her sister through the rough time. But, the arrangement seemed more permanent. Anita admitted that she and Bobby were having marital problems. Little did Maria know that she would not be the only Santos with such. A mysterious man named Zach Slater stirred Pine Valley and supported Bobby’s wishful plans. Maria was uneasy around Zach and no one knew why. Maria admitted to Ryan, Zach’s current rival, that she knew Zach when she was Maureen. They had a relationship, but she left him when David told her she was in trouble. They had many unresolved feelings.
Edmund caught on and it was his turn to be jealous. He wanted to divorce
Maria after his second operation to reverse his paralysis proved benign. Maria
was ready to fight for her marriage, but Zach’s constant presence in her
life did not make it any easier. Edmund began to take a dark turn when he went
on a mission to prove Zach was the sniper who almost killed Ryan Lavery. Edmund
went on an
unfortunate
meeting with a source, which lead to his murder.
This time Maria knew Edmund was not going to turn up alive. She had worked on his dying body at the hospital, unable to let go. Sam and Maddie turned on Maria, blaming Edmund’s obsession to ruin Zach on Maria. Maria had thought she and her husband and met some reconciliation before his death, but his will proved otherwise. He arranged for Brooke to be the executor to his estate, and left Maria with nothing. To add to the pain, Zach was the key suspect in Edmund’s murder.
Maria’s children actively worked to ruin Maria’s life. Maddie took it too far when she tried to make Zach look like a child pedophile. Maria made the announcement that she was going to uproot the family to make a fresh start away from Pine Valley. Sam rebelled, and begged Maria to allow him to stay with Tad Martin, his biological Great-uncle. Maria agreed because Sam was already older and had the right to explore his biological family. Maria and Maddie made their way to California to be close to Mateo and Hayley, closing the door on Pine Valley's Wildwind era.
