Lily Benton Montgomery’s life has been a journey of trials and tribulations. She was the only child of con man Denny Benton and the equally manipulative Carla Benton. Lily made her first appearance in Pine Valley after Carla, now going as Laurel Banning, was caught embezzling money from the Mason Foundation. Laurel was to go to prison for this offense until she revealed the motive for her crime. Lily was autistic, and was attending a very expensive school. Denny was a deadbeat, and Laurel was responsible for her well being. The money Laurel stole was to pay for her tuition. District Attorney and new friend Jackson Montgomery dropped the charges on Laurel. Jack and Laurel grew close. Denny returned to put a crowbar in their relationship, but Laurel wouldn’t have it. Denny began abusing Laurel as he did in the past, so Laurel shot and killed him. Laurel and Jack went on the run, growing closer with everyday. As fugitives, the two married. Eventually, the law caught up to them and they returned to Pine Valley were Laurel was exonerated for her crime in light of self-defense.

Jack decided to formally adopt Lily. It was Laurel’s decision to keep Lily in her special school. Laurel and Jack’s relationship grew apart after Jack had a one-night stand with former lover, Erica Kane. Jack let Laurel go, but he remained as Lily’s legal guardian after their divorce. It was Jack who had to dry Lily’s tears when Laurel was accidentally assassinated by an inebriated sniper.

Lily remained at boarding school, cultivating a great fascination for complex mathematics. On a visit to the school, Jack and her instructor concluded that Lily was at a point in her life were the school was no longer necessary. Lily moved in with Jack, and her recently created family of Reggie Montgomery and Greenlee duPres.

Lily could not have moved into her father’s apartment at a worst time. Her cousin, Bianca Montgomery, was reeling over the death of her daughter, Miranda; and Jack recently had his heart broken by Erica’s deceptions. One night, Erica returned from her tenure in Las Vegas. She had been drinking that night and went to Jack’s apartment to talk to him, only to find Lily. Erica scared the standoffish teen. Jack came in just in time before Lily had a panic attack. Reggie took care of Lily as the rest of the family confronted Erica about her drinking and downward spiral.

After Erica’s intervention, she wanted to bond with Lily. Lily was lost near a railroad track and the red lights startled her. It was Erica who saved her and brought her back to Jack’s apartment.

Unbeknownst to Lily, she would become a crucial catalyst in the revelation of the true fate of Miranda Montgomery. At the groundbreaking for the Women’s Clinic, Lily overheard JR Chandler and Adam Chandler discussing how Bianca’s child wasn’t really dead. Lily did not understand because Bianca had just explained to her the night before what had happened to her baby. She told Jack, Kendall Hart and Tad Martin, sparking their curiosity.

Lily had her own set of problems when school started in the fall. Three girls, China, Autumn and Chantal, decided it was there duty to initiate Lily into Pine Valley High School life. The girls convinced Lily she was “popular,” dressing her up in ridiculous outfits and layers of makeup. Reggie was very protective of his little sister and confronted the girls. Reggie’s protectionist attitude toward Lily got him in a lot of trouble. Lily never truly comprehended what the girls did to her, but knew it was wrong. She began hanging out with her true friends: Reggie and Danielle Frye.

Lily harbored an innocent crush on Aidan Devane. Aidan thought their flirtation was harmless. Lily decided to help Aidan in his pursuit of the truth behind Jonathan Lavery. When she was going to report her findings to Aidan, she caught him in an embrace with his girlfriend, Anita Santos. Lily ran off, heartbroken. She was hiding in the Wildwind barn thinking she was alone. Then, she was joined by Edmund Grey, who did not know she was there. Suddenly, he was hit on the back of the head with a shovel by Jonathan. Lily realized she was the witness to a murder. Suddenly, the barn caught on fire. Aidan found her and took her to the hospital. There, she entered a world of mathematics, unable to comprehend what she had saw. Slowly, Lily recovered and exonerated Zach Slater for the crime. Still, she could not properly convey who killed Edmund.

Lily and Greenlee were going to hide at Lily's school when Jonathan intercepted. They were kidnapped, and Lily admitted to Greenlee the truth about Jonathan. The sisters, with the help of Kendall Hart and Ryan Lavery miraculously made it out of Jonathan's clutches. Lily sought comfort in a hollowed out tree. There, she met a new friend, Sam Grey, Edmund's son.

Lily and Sam grew closer. He understood Lily better than anyone else did. Before Jackson and Erica's wedding, Sam and Lily shared their first kiss. Lily confided the fact in Erica. She was also shocked to learn that Erica had been married nine times before her father. She was worried that Erica would break her vows to her father, but Erica assured otherwise. During the ceremony, Lily gave Erica the best gift possible: she allowed Erica to touch her. Lily went a little overboard when it was time to go home. She accidently stowed away on Jack and Erica's honeymoon. Luckily, Reggie was there to bring her safely back to shore.

After Ryan’s supposed death, Lily saw his “ghost” at the Season’s. Sure that was just her imagination, everyone just wrote Lily’s vision off. But her second ghostly apparition made people turn their heads. She found Sam’s aunt, Julia Keefer, haunting the halls of Wildwind. Lily helped Sam cope with his changing world. But, all the pressure seemed to much for the teen, and he began to act out. His behavior was scarring Lily. She decided to break things off with Sam.

When Ryan came to Jack’s apartment looking for Greenlee, Lily’s old suspicions where confirmed. Ryan was alive. Ryan also brought Jonathan back. At first scarred by her former captor, Lily realized something was different with him. Jonathan told Lily about the tumor that was responsible for his erratic actions before.

Jonathan was being implicated in a long list of crimes that he assured were caused by a woman in disguise. Only Lily believed Jonathan. She agreed to help Jonathan investigate the woman who was framing him. All their time together made Jackson uneasy. When he caught them in a kiss at the Mardi Gras ball, he could not permit their relationship to go any further. Lily was given an ultimatum: either stop seeing Jonathan or go back to her boarding school.
