Ethan Ramsey’s stampede into the FUSION office halted the crucifixion of Ryan Lavery at the hands of the Cambias Industry Boards of Directors. He had a very spectacular claim to make: he was the true Cambias heir. In his possession was a letter from his biological mother, Hannah Nichols, revealing he was the result of an affair between she, the Cambias family maid, and the late Alexander Cambias, II. Hannah wanted to protect Ethan from the senior Alexander Cambias, giving him away to Edith Ramsey. If this claim were true, Ryan would loose everything. Unfortunately, Ethan’s claim could not be corroborated since every biological Cambias is thought to be dead and their bodies irretrievable.

Kendall Hart, Ryan’s former lover and current business partner, saw a potential ally in Ethan. Ethan was hesitant at first to trust Kendall. Kendall bonded with Ethan over the fact that her sister, Bianca Montgomery, was the mother of his late cousin, Miranda, and that she was at one time romantic with his uncle, Michael Cambias. Kendall told Ethan that she believed him and was willing to help prove his genealogy. Kendall introduced Ethan to Bianca, and the two immediately became fast friends. Bianca realized she could help Ethan in his quest by taking DNA from the camisole she was wearing when Miranda was born. Before she could do it to Ethan, the camisole disappeared, as did Ethan’s hope for an answer.

Kendall was the truly lucky one to meet Ethan, as he saved her from drowning in a daze during a murder mystery game at The Season’s Casino. Ryan was shot at the end of the game, and Ethan was implicated as the prime suspect. He was hauled off to prison. Kendall tried her hardest to post his bail but was unsuccessful. He also received a visit from Zach Slater, who claimed to be an old friend to the Cambias family. Zach volunteered to obtain an attorney for Ethan. For some reason, Zach was trying to convince Kendall to dump Ethan. Ethan was exonerated for the crime when Ryan was shot at again while he was in police custody. Ethan tracked down Zach and told him to leave he and Kendall alone.

Zach was revealed to be Alexander Cambias, Jr.; meaning, Zach was Ethan's father. Soon Ethan was able to corroborate his own identity when Miranda Montgomery was revealed to be alive. Ethan, now in charge of Cambias, warned Zach to stay away from the Kanes. Ethan enlisted the help of JR Chandler, his new employee, to ruin Zach. But JR had other things on his mind, including his budding crush with Kendall. Ethan arrived at the Wildwind barn only to find Zach hovering over Edmund Grey's dead body. Ethan maintained he saw Zach kill Edmund. Kendall defended Ethan to everyone even as the forensics dismissed his story. When Zach was exonerated for the crime, Kendall broke off with Ethan seeing how much he had changed now that he was a Cambias.

Ethan tried to win Kendall back to no avail. She gave him a ultimatum: either choose her or his company. Ethan at first chose his company, but reconsidered after visiting Bianca Montgomery in Paris. He arrived in Florida at Jack and Erica's wedding to profess his love for Kendall, but it was too late. Kendall had married Zach.

Upon returning to Pine Valley, Ethan dismissed Kendall. Instead, he began a romance with Simone Torres. She was attracted to his sophistication, and he was attracted to her fun wild side. Simone and Ethan fell in love in a very unconventional Pine Valley manner with very little drama. On New Years, Ethan proposed to a surprised Simone. She accepted, and they began to plan their futures together.

Ethan hired Ryan at Cambias. He had a hunch that his father was up to something. Together, they discovered he had caused the blackout the night Kendall was supposed to be inseminated with Ryan and Greenlee's baby. The men decided it was best to corner Zach so that he could deny the truth of the matter. At the Mardi Gras Ball, Kendall learned of her ex-husband's betrayal, and she left him again.

But no one was leaving the Ball. An explosion caused the building to cave in on itself, and Ethan, Simone, and Zach were trapped together in the rubble. Ethan was injured the most of the three. Zach tried to help his son, but Ethan rejected him citing that he was never there to help him before. Ethan finally confronted his father with all the pain he had caused him by leaving the Cambias family including his painful childhood, and Michael's turn to the darkside. The rescuers would eventually get to the trio, but it was too late. With injuries that proved to substantial, Ethan died vowing to never forgive his father and leaving Simone devastated.
