Law and Order runs through Derek Frye's blood, not only is he a police
detective for the Pine Valley Police department, but his sister, Livia, is a
defense attorney. The Frye's came onto the Pine Valley scene with very little
notice. Derek's first case would be the Dixie Cooney abduction by pyscho-path
Billy Clyde Tuggle. Dixie's then husband Tad Martin enlisted his service
in helping
him rescue her from his clutches. Immediatly, a friendship started between
the two. When they finnally got to the cabin in which Dixie had been abducted,
Derek risked his life to save Tad by taking a bullet in the gut. Dixie
and Tad made a successful escape and Derek lived. He was greatly saddened
to witness Tad's death at Billy Clyde's hands later that year.
Derek soon made detective when fellow detective Trevor Dillon decided
to branch out and form his own private eye agency. Still, Derek acted
as the go between the PD and Trevor's firm, not always creating the best situations.
Detective Frye soon fell for fellow officer, Mimi Reed. The two had an
elusive office romance attempting not to be discovered by their superiors who
frowned on such a relationship. Lucas Barnes, Livia's ex-husband, had an eye
for Mimi as well. They shared a night of passion. Soon, Mimi was pregnant and
unsure of who the father was. A paternity test showed Derek was in fact the
baby's father. Eventually the two were
married and greeted baby Danielle.
At one point, Derek took the law into his own hands when nephew, Terrence
Frye, was harassed at school by racist students. He came home one day
beaten up. Derek sent fellow Officer, Taylor Roxbury Cannon, in to investigate.
Disguised as a white woman, she infiltrated a white supremacist group on campus.
Together they put an end to their operations. Unfortunately, all this
overtime took a toll on his marriage. He had a one night stand with Taylor,
and Mimi made it apparent their relationship was over. Later that year,
Derek
had to say good-bye to Livia who was promoted and moved away
from Pine Valley with husband Tom, and children Terrence and Jamal.
Derek remains a detective on the force. He had to save Tad from a downgrading spiral when he found out JR Chandler was taking drugs. Although never an integral part of the Proteus case, Derek did play a major role in solving the death of teen drug supplier Sweeney, exonerating Tad for the crime. Chris Stamp enlisted his help on another case: a hitman was running loose in Pine Valley and had the members of Wildwind in mind. Derek reported to the scene but was incapacitated before he could save Chris from the hitman's bullet.
Unknown to Derek, Danielle ran away from home and came to Pine Valley. Derek, now the Police Chief, was too busy to attend to a search for her. Livia found Danielle hiding out at Jackson Montgomery's house. He planned to return her to Mimi, but Mimi pulled the rug over his eyes. She dropped off all of Danielle's belongings and told Derek she was his problem now.
Danielle would prove to be a problem just like Mimi warned. That first
home summer, she and Reggie Montgomery got themselves in a
load
of trouble. Their biggest caper was their involvement with Jamie Martin, who
was trying to exonerate himself for the drugging of Babe Carey. Danielle and
Reggie where brought in for questioning regarding a drug bust both of them where
caught at. Jamie appealed to Derek, accusing JR Chandler of trying to frame
all of them for a crime. With coxing from Livia and Tad, Derek agreed to allow
Jamie to go undercover in prison to clear his name.
Though Derek did not approve of her relationship with Reggie, he was just happy to be part of Dani’s life. Mimi came back to Pine Valley to reclaim Dani after she became engaged to Garrett Williams. Derek wanted Dani to choose on her own whether to go back to Mimi, but Mimi reminded Derek of his years as a negligent father.
Mimi and Derek joined forces to track down the crime-lord referred to as The Dragon. The anxiety of the situation only increased when Julia Keefer, The Dragon’s main target, disappeared from Witness Protection. Neither knew that Garrett was their very target. Things turned around when Dani revealed Garrett was making inappropriate advantages on her. Derek consoled his daughter as Mimi struggled to come to grips with the truth. It took Garrett’s death to finally open Mimi’s eyes.
