World Renowned Cardiologist
David Hayward showed up in Pine Valley in November 1997. As a famous
cardiologist, he was welcomed at the Pine Valley hospital by 
Joe
and Jake Martin. Only Dr. Allie Doyle was less than happy to see David, her
ex-boyfriend who knew that she had lied to get into Stanford. David was determined
to win Allie back. In order to get rid of Allie's boyfriend, Jake, he tried
to kill Adam Chandler with a wrong pill and made it look like it was Jake. Allie
and Jake teamed up with Liza, Stuart and Scott Chandler to prove that it was
David. Liza pretended as if she really wanted to see Adam killed.
So, she hired David to finish the deed with another dose. In fact, she had switched
the medication and the man she thought to be Adam was Stuart. In the last minute,
David could not go through with the plan and admitted to his earlier crime.
Little did he know, Jake and Allie had caught the confession on tape. To save
his skin, David blackmailed Allie with her past. Though Allie’s deceptions
came to surface, so did David’s. He was asked to waive his privileges
at Pine Valley 
Hospital.
In summer 1998, David returned to Pine Valley. He saved Liza's life
after the explosion at Holidays. Liza was appreciative for her one time rival’s
assistance and hired him for the interim as medical advisor to WRCW. David was
taking care of Liza’s pregnancy when he learned the startling truth: Liza
was pregnant with Adam, and not Jake’s daughter. Allie had switched the
sperm samples and the tests results before she left town.
Gillian
Lavery had an affair with David. When she realized she loved her husband, Ryan
Lavery, she put an end to her infidelity. The night Ryan went on the run for
the rape of Kit Montgomery, Gillian Lavery turned to David for help. She needed
money fast and knew David could supply her with it. Against her better judgment,
she had a one-night stand with David to secure the funds for their getaway.
Though the couple was caught, David and Gillian’s affair tore the couple
apart.
With Liza on his side, David slowly worked his way back to the favorable
side of Pine Valley society. He was christened a hero for his role in curing
Dixie Cooney’s degenerative heart condition. Palmer Cortlandt in appreciation
used his position on the board at Pine Valley Hospital to grant him his privileges
to practice again. He was given a grant by the Andrassy 
Foundation,
named in honor of the late Count Dimitri Marick.
In 1999, David's mother Vanessa Bennett. came to town. David resented
her and refused to treat her after a heart attack. He had blamed Vanessa for
his father’s suicide. Vanessa used David’s position to secure a
ranking in the social hierarchy, namely as best friend and confidant to Erica
Kane, and the role of the newest Mrs. Palmer Cortlandt.
David and Erica were involved in a car accident while they drove in
a storm. David had to perform emergency surgery after Erica’s hurt was
punctured. But for her, the greatest crime would be the scars to her face. David
nursed Erica back to health, all the while holding off Vanessa who saw this
as an opportunity to write a tell-all novel about Erica while she was down.
David found Erica a proper plastic surgeon, and her looks were restored. Erica
had fallen in love with her hero.
David helped Liza when she went into labor with Colby Chandler. He
would testify against Jake at the custody trial for Colby. This would be the
beginning of David’s longstanding rivalry with the Martins. He had blamed
Joe for loosing his job in the first place. He also met Martin family attorney
Leslie Coulson, who would play a significant role in his next plot to hurt the
Martins.
Leo duPres came to town with everyone thinking he was Vanessa’s
latest gigolo. It was revealed that he was David's half-brother. David helped
to exonerate Leo for the murder of Vanessa’s real lover, Paolo. The brother
formed a close bond on the basis of their mother’s insanity. 
David found Dimitri alive one day in his office. He was able to diagnose
Dimitri’s disease and began treatment on him. Dixie, now David’s
administrative assistant, helped David. David fell in love with Dixie’s
compassion, something Erica was lacking. Dixie’s marriage at the same
time was on the rocks because of her husband, Tad Martin’s, late night
hours with Liza. David and Dixie began an affair. Dixie broke it off because
she was very much still in love with her husband and David was still attached.
David had created a new libido-enhancing drug that he planned to give
Tad so that he would cheat on Dixie again. He accidentally gave it to Erica,
a recovering addict. Their relationship was over, but David’s plots were
only just beginning. David enlisted Leslie’s help to seduce Tad. She had
a long unrequited crush on him. At Ryan’s company launch party, he drugged
the punch leading to a ship of doped up passengers. Leslie spent the night with
Tad, and David broke the news to Dixie.
David’s plan backfired when Leslie planned to kill Dixie and
keep Tad for herself. David never took Leslie’s fragile mental state into
consideration. After Tad and David saved her, David knew he had lost Dixie.
He found a small victory in the end of Tad and Dixie’s marriage.
Brooke English's daughter Laura had a heart condition and Brooke wanted
David as Laura's doctor. David was in prison for the Libidizone incident. Erica
knew that David would be the only one who could save Laura. She Brooke negotiated
his release from prison. Laura was dying and needed a heart transplant. Even
this surgery hit close to home for David when it was Gillian who would be the
donor. Emotions ran high when Leo announced her was going to marry Laura first.
After a brief hospital ceremony, David successfully saved 
Laura.
The Proteus drug scandal hit Pine Valley like a tidal wave. JR Chandler
was one of its first victims. He broke into David’s room for drugs. David
used this as a bargaining chip to stay out of jail. Chris Stamp suspected David
to be the drug-lord because of his background with drugs and breaking the law.
He assigned Anna to investigate David. Anna found out that David’s drug
experiments were actually in search of a cure for Dixie’s worsening condition.
David had discovered that Vanessa was in fact the woman the town was looking
for. In order to keep his confidence, Anna married David so she could enact
spousal confidentiality. In truth, the couple had fallen in love.
Two tragedies would finally bond husband and wife as a family. First,
news came from Switzerland that Dixie, who he had sent there to undergo special
treatment for her high risk pregnancy, had died after driving off a cliff. Then,
David witnessed as Leo fell off Miller’s fall trying to save his wife,
Greenlee duPres, from Vanessa. With all his family gone, David found a new one
in Anna. They pulled Greenlee through her grief. They also formed a parental
bond with David’s niece, Maggie Stone. Maggie announced to David that
she was going to become a doctor just like him.
In summer 2002, Maria Santos Grey returned to town as Maureen Gorman.
Anna found out that David had known that Maria was alive and had kept her from
her family. He had experimented on Maria with a drug that saved her life, yet
whipped her memory clear. She filed 
for
divorce from David. Anna learned that she was pregnant but was not sure if she
wanted to baby. David was able to convince Anna not to have an abortion, and
promised to stay by Anna.
Since David was not allowed to work in Pine Valley Hospital anymore,
he started working in Front Street Clinic. One of his patients, Reggie, held
Anna hostage. Anna was examined after she was freed and Dr. Clader found out
that the baby's heart was not okay. Anna went to Zurich for more tests and for
surgery. After Leora Hayward was born, named in honor of Leo, Anna and David
were told that she needed a pacemaker. David became very protective of his daughter
and refused to believe that she had a heart problem. Finally, Anna convinced
David that Leora needed surgery. David was however not allowed to operate on
his daughter. During the surgery, Leora died.
Leora’s death cased David to have a downward spiral to near
insanity. He began having visions of his daughter as if she was a small child.
He wanted retribution against the doctor who took her away, namely Joe Martin.
He concocted a serum to erase the Martin family memory at the July 4th picnic.
Anna got wind and intervened. At his cabin, they salvaged whatever relationship
they had left and came to terms with the loss of their daughter. Anna decided
to give David one more chance.
David was back to his old tricks when he learned Bianca Montgomery
was raped by Michael Cambias. He teamed up with Erica to make him pay. When
Anna found evidence implicating Michael in the murder, she decided her life
with David was over. She left Pine Valley knowing their was nothing left for
her there.
David kept Bianca’s secret that she was not going to abort Michael’s
child. He treated her under Frankie’s name so no one would catch 
wind
of what was really going on. But, his love for Bianca was challenged after the
birth of her daughter. Bianca supposedly lost her child in a storm. In fact,
her child was alive and being raised by Babe and JR Chandler. When David confronted
Krystal Carey, Babe’s mother, with the truth she brought up their one
night fling years ago at Stanford. To buy time, she told David he was Babe’s
father. The diversion was enough for Krystal to make it to the airport but David
caught up with her. Her lie turned out to be the truth: Babe was his child.
In a precarious position, David grasped at straws deciding he needed to salvage
whatever relationship he would ever have for Babe, betraying Bianca.
Babe found out her son, Adam Chandler, III, was alive. She and Jamie
Martin went on the run. Tad, David and Krystal teamed up to protect their children.
Tad and David’s butting heads made the safe 
passage
complicated. Also, David and Krystal began to re-explore their past relationship,
though she was technically still seeing Tad. David had to say goodbye to the
daughter and grandson that he only met. When he returned to Pine Valley, he
begged a comatose Bianca to wake up so that she could be mad at him for lying
to her. He needed her forgiveness to move on. She awoke when she was finally
reunited with her daughter.
When the truth about their lies came out, David and his family faced
litigation for kidnapping. Krystal took the fall with prison time, but David
was not left unpunished. For falsifying medical documents, his medical license
was taken away. 
He
wanted to be close to Babe, so he volunteered at the hospital where she too
was serving her sentence. Babe made it clear that she did not want anything
to do with David and his manipulations. Greenlee confronted David for being
so engrossed in his new family, he had forgotten about everyone else, namely
Maggie who left town with Bianca after being abused by her boyfriend.
While visiting Krystal in prison, David met a convict named Di Kirby.
There was something overtly familiar about her. When she completed her sentence,
David approached her with a job. She had a subtle resemblance to Dixie. So,
he plotted to have her pretend to be Dixie at Chandler Mansion so as to be able
to manipulate JR into giving more visitation hours to Babe for his grandson,
Adam Chandler, III. But, David began questioning his own plots when more and
more nuances of Dixie’s personality manifested themselves in Di. Di was
even missing a kidney and had a heart problem, just like Dixie. Di in the end
claimed that she was in fact Dixie.
David was not convinced and did his best to get to the bottom of her
claim. Krystal’s sentence was commuted, and he helped her to discover
Di’s true roots. David learned Di was in fact Dixie’s sister. He
offered her a helping hand to escape he persecution of the town, but Di did
not want anymore help from her onetime benefactor.
David began to romance Julia Keefer. Julia had eyes for Ryan, but entertained
David’s flirtation.
